Dear _______________,
I am so excited to tell you about my weekend!
This weekend was Father’s Day. We took my dad out to his favorite restaurant. He loves Italian food. Do you like Italian food?
And how is school going? Speaking of school, do you know the United Nations Sustainable Development goals? In one of my classes, we talked about its goal number one, “No Poverty” today. The topic was real to me. I live in San Francisco. We have a lot of homeless people here and in neighboring cities. They usually live in tents. Sometimes they ask people walking by to give them money. The city government usually leaves the homeless people alone. Some organizations feed them and give them haircuts.
My mom taught us always to give homeless people food. I agree with her. All people need to have food and water to survive. My mom usually packs extra granola bars to give out. Do you eat granola bars? I only like the ones with chocolate in them.
Tell me how your weekend went. What did you do? Do you have homeless people in Romania? Do they live in tents? How do you think we can help the homeless people around the world? think we can help the poor people by listening to them. What do you think? I was thinking of volunteering at our local homeless shelter. I hope you are well. Write back soon!
Warm regards,
Aurora
Dear_____________,
I loved the picture of your family. Thank you for sharing! Your dog is super cute. Thanks for explaining the homeless situation in Romania. Some of the problems you are having are the same as the problems we are facing.
I volunteered at the homeless shelter. I tried to be polite and respectful. I have seen people say rude things to homeless people. Have you seen people say bad things to them? When I got to the shelter, I was afraid I was going to say the wrong thing. I got very quiet and listened. I let people talk, and I overheard conversations.
I learned that some people could not afford to live in houses anymore because they were too expensive. The expensive homes and apartments are why many people became unhoused. You said it is the same in Romania, right? I have been thinking about this problem. I want to come up with a solution, but I know I can’t do it on my own. I think I will come up with some ideas and share them with the people at the shelter. One of my ideas is that my city should take old abandoned buildings and fix them up and use them as shelters, what do you think? Do you have any ideas?
Tell me if you do!
I look forward to your next letter.
Your friend,
Aurora
Dear_____________,
How have you been since the last letter? I hope you are well. On my side, I have so much to tell you! Talking about poverty situations in our towns really inspired me to do something about it. So, I am actually writing a campaign letter on poverty in our area.
My city has over 7,500 homeless people, and it is growing! The unhoused set up tents on the sides of roads and small alleyways. The nights here are cold, and sometimes an unhoused person doesn’t even have a tent. They sleep in cardboard boxes or whatever they can find. Since I started volunteering at a homeless shelter with my mom and I heard many people’s stories. The biggest thing I learned was that it became difficult to live in houses anymore because it was too costly.
This is a big issue with a long history. I researched to find out what I can do. There are a couple of ways I can help. An impactful way is to go to town hall meetings and vote. I am too young to vote, but I think I can go to the town hall meetings. I can also ask more people to volunteer like me. I will bring more awareness about this issue to those around me. I have become passionate about this topic, thanks to our discussion! I think more people should all take the time to talk to each other about poverty. It is a global crisis that we can solve. I will keep you updated with how this project goes. If you have any project you are working on please let me know. Is there any ways I can support you? If so, don’t hesitate to tell me!
I look forward to your next letter.
Sincerely,
Aurora
